In our world we often hear that we are the masters of our own destiny - we define who we are.  Even John the Baptist could not define his own identity, but needed to look to Jesus to find out who he really was.

We cannot appreciate Christmas, as Christians, if we do not cultivate a real interior life.  That begins by watching and waiting for Jesus to reveal himself to us in prayer.

Considering the perfection of Heaven gives us an appreciation for the need for a final purification - our transition between the imperfection here to the perfection there.  We call this transition Purgatory.  Far from something to fear, this is a reason for hope!

Jesus uses the familiar image of the vineyard to show us the Father's care for our wellbeing, but also his desire that we bear fruit.  The vineyard is also entrusted to us to protect and nourish.  Today the Church celebrates Respect Life Sunday.  Each human person, made in God's image, is precious in His sight.  He entrusts them into our care with the same hope with which He sent His only begotten Son.

If we want to teach others about God's gift of forgiveness, we need to first experience it in our lives and then live it out in our daily life.  The Cross of Christ reminds us that no one is outside of God's mercy - He died for us all.

25th Sunday Yr A

The Church celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on Sept 14.  As we are reminded to lift up this sign of our salvation, we are encouraged to not forget the works of the Lord.  How often we ignore a cross or crucifix, forgetting the tremendous act of love that is symbolizes?  Do not forget the works of the Lord!
