Jesus calls his disciples the salt of the earth and the light of the world. If we are not bringing meaning and truth to the world, Jesus says, our whole purpose as the Church is lost. It is so easy to get used to a tasteless and darkened practice of our faith. We must not allow ourselves to become complacent.

St. John the Baptist’s message came out of the silence of the dessert. Silence can be challenging. Why is it so hard for us just to be with ourselves? Have we become unaccustomed to the voice of God? Silence helps us come to know ourselves. Only when we know where we are can we have the road to God pointed out to us.
